Upper Klamath Wildlife Refuge

7/17/19 Today I woke up around 7 am, today is the day we take a tour of the Klamath River. But first we meet at their research station just a 20 minute drive away. There we met Alex Gonyaw, he goes more into detail about the Klamath River basin. 1820 was the first contact of the native people, there are three tribes of the river basin the Modoc, the Klamath, and the Yahooskin. In 1864 the Klamath boundary was reduced by over 40% of the original size, He talked about the fish   in the lake and how they age them, the fish are almost like trees with counting their rings   you can age some of them by counting the amount of lines on their scales. Two of the fish in the upper Klamath and Lower Klamath are listed in the endangered species act, the people at research station believe they are listed because they are an endemic species and it is easier for this species to be affected because it is only found in one spot. There are 33 species found in the upper Klamath wildlife refuge and

paintbrush

july-15 today was an early start to the day, we woke up at 6:30 in the morning with the sound of Jessica waking us all up. Our destination today was a shrub-steppe in the pine mountain area to help wildlife management with an elusive plant. The weather was cloudy and there was a sprinkle here and there but it was overall an amazing day to work outside. It took about an hour and a half to reach our destination We worked with Marlo Fischer and Charmaine Powers to help locate green tinged paintbrush. The plant we are looking for is native and only found in Oregon, most of the plants we found were lime colored and looked a little different from a traditional paintbrush plant. Our main objective is to locate the plants to help preserve the elusive plant from something we learned a couple days ago called prescribed fires. The scientific name of the plant is called Castilleja Chlorotica, the plant is considered forest sensitive. The fact that surprised me was the green tinged paintbrush is

Hike around the river

Blog 8 Sunday- July 14 Today we are heading to take David back home, but first a little hike at the old mill district park. We arrived there at around 9:00 am and there was a river that cut in between the hiking trail. My friend Maria and I were taking our time and enjoying the view of the river, there were hikers running a marathon and we were caught in between the runners. I started with a sweater and by then end of the little hike I ended in a t-shirt, I could not wait to take a shower. We were on our way to Joy's house and people are saying were going to have hamburgers for

All about Logging

Blog 6 Thursday- July 11 Today we woke up at the fire station and I had the best night sleep I had in a while. Alex and I packed up all our bags and everyone loaded up the van to head out. Before we headed out we met in the fire station with Brad Donahue and he talked about the warm spring Indian reservation. They hire over 200 people during the peak season of firefighting, prescribed fires are another topic we covered. Prescribed fires are big projects here at warm springs and we are going to take a tour to see what the necessary steps are to prescribe a fire. Brad goes on to say they manage over 664,000 acres of land on the reservation, they have a twenty person hot shot crew and they travel to Alaska to fight fires in the summer for a couple months at a time. We discussed about some of the things that can affect the fire season and wind was a big topic. The other topics were climate change, it can affect fuels, temperature, weather, and time of year can all affect the fi

Fire station

Blog 5 Wednesday-July 10 Today we got up bright and early to pack up from last night's event, it affected some of us more than others but I felt okay. We were told that we could move our camp to a new location and there was sigh of relief that we didn't have to stay there another night. Our new location is a fire station and we are so grateful to have this opportunity to stay there, the weather is nice and the air is fresh here and it feels like the rest we needed to move forward from yesterday. We got to shower! Finally. Our group was on cooking duty and we made chicken alfredo with a slice of watermelon.

Road trip

Blog 4 07/09/19 Today was an early start and as usual we started with packing our bags and being in a rush to make breakfast. We needed to collect the game cameras to see if we even got anything, me and Grayson set out to see if we got anything interesting and our first two camera traps were easy to get because they were right next to our camp. The last trail cam was a different story we had to cross the Klickitat River to collect it. We got our waiters to collect the last camera, our co-director for the camping trip Jessica Black was showing us what we collected. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t see anything big. We seen two squirrels in the camera trap next to our campsite so I can’t complain, we seen more than the other groups. After everyone collected their own camera traps we headed for warm springs. When we got there I think myself and everyone thought it was going to be a forest area but it was an urban park area. When we got there it was raining and humid,

Potato Hill

Blog 3 07/08/19 Today started just like the day before, with Jessica knocking on our tent. I haven’t got tired of it yet but she says that will change as the days pass by. The agenda for today includes potato hill also the night before we heard some scary stories of Sasquatch and also learned not to whistle at night because it’s a bad thing to do, I tried to get an explanation as to why I could and the response was simply “just don’t”. The stories kind of freaked me out a little but we’re going in the day so I’m not too scared. The ride was a little bumpy there and we seen a black bear in the middle of the road! The hike was a little more than I expected and my brother Alex and I were
